Sein Bühnendebut erfolgte 1946 als Colline in "La Bohème" am Teatro Reggio Calabria. 1947 debütierte er an der Mailänder Scala als Pimen in "Boris Godunov'" - 1949 übernahm er den Boris. 1949 ebenfalls als Boris Godunov Debut an der Covent Garden Opera in London. Er wirkte bei den Salzburger Festspielen und beim Maggio Musicale in Florenz mit. 1950 war er für Verdis "Don Carlo" Rudolf Bings Wunschkandidat für dessen erste Saisoneröffnung, erhielt jedoch keine Einreisegenehmigung und wurde durch Cesare Siepi ersetzt. Spätere Angebote der Metropolitan Opera lehnte er alle ab. Weitere Stationen seiner großen Karriere waren unter anderem Paris, die Arena in Verona, Edinburgh, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires und die Wiener Staatsoper. Auf dem Konzertpodium blieb er noch bis in die achtziger Jahre aktiv. In 1946 he made his stage debut at the Teatro Reggio Calabria as Colline in "La Bohème". In 1947 he appeared for the first time at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in the role of Pimen and advanced to the title role in 1949. Again as Boris he made his Covent Garden debut in the same year. He sang at the Salzburg Festival and at the Maggio Musicale in Florence. Christoff had been Rudolf Bing´s first choice for the role of King Philip at the Met in 1950/51, but it proved impossible to obtain a visa and he had to be replaced by Cesare Siepi. Later offers from the Metwere all turned Further important stages of his career included, among others, Paris, the Arena di Verona, Edinburgh, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and the Vienna State Opera. His career on the concert platform lasted well into the Eighties.
