Ester Mazzoleni

Promotion Text

Lebendige Vergangenheit

Mazzoleni was one of the few singers of her day to choose a large number of her roles from a repertoire that was exotic at the time: Vestale, Medea, Selika, Elena (Vespri siciliani), Valentine (Les Huguenots) and Lucrezia Borgia. She also sang many Verdi roles: in Ernani, Don Carlo, Un ballo in maschera, I Lombardi, La traviata and Aida. She sang her first Norma in 1910 in Bologna and ended her career with that role in Naples in 1926. For the most part Mazzoleni limited her career to Italian stages (apart from guest appearances at Teatro Liceo in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid and the Budapest Opera as well as Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires). An automobile accident left her paralysed and she continued to live a seclude life in Palermo, where she died on 17 May 1982 at the age of 100.
