Lebendige Vergangenheit - Giovanni Zenatello

Die übermächtige Erscheinung Emico Carusos hat viele der Zeitgenossen und Fachkollegen dieses "primo uomo" aus unserem Bewußtsein verdrängt. Und doch wirkten in den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten unseres Jahrhunderts mehrere Künstler, die wir zu den hervorragendsten Vertretern des italienischen Tenorfaches zählen müssen. Eine der stärksten Kapazitäten dieses an Gesangstalenten reich gesegneten Zeitalters war Giovanni Zenatello. Als besonderes Merkmal dieses vielseitigen Künstlers muß hervorgehoben werden, daß er neben den hoch dramatischen Partien, die das Äußerste an Kraft und Stimmenentfaltung abverlangen, weiterhin ausgesprochen lyrische Rollen wie Faust, Rudolf, Masaniello ("Die Stumme von Portici") u. a. in seinem Repertoire behielt. Als Otello war Zenatello in nahezu allen großen Opernhäusern der Welt zu hören, er hat diese Partie mehr als fünfhundertmal gesungen, und würde in dieser Partie allgemein als der berufene Nachfolger des legendären Fransesco Tamagno angesehen.Aus Zenatellos umfangreichen Rollenfach seien noch weiter genannt: Raoul in den " Hugenotten", Andre Chenier, Radames, Don Jose, Cavaradossi, Samson, Tannhäuser und Hermann ("Pique Dame"). Bedeutende Erfolge konnte der Künstler vor allem in Nord- und Südamerika ernten. Mehrere Spielzeiten hindurch gehörte er dem Ensemble der Chicago Opera an, weiterhin sang er am Manhattan Opera House New York, in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo usw. Ein wichtiges Kapitel in seiner Karriere nehmen die Opern festspiele in Verona ein, zu deren Initiatoren er gehörte. Bei den ersten Spielen in der Arena im Jahre 1913 war er als Radames zu hören. Zenatello blieb bis zu seinem Lebensende dieser Institution verbunden - zeitweilig auch als Impresario. Die Tonaufnahmen dieses eminenten Künstlers zählen zu geschätztesten Werten, die uns durch die Schallplatte erhalten geblieben sind. The towering stature of Emico Caruso has relegated several of his contemporaries to a position of almost secondary importance. And yet, during the first two decades of this century, there were numerous tenors that must be regarded as exemplary exponents of the Italian tenor repertoire. One of the most vital vocal talents during that time of plenty was Giovanni Zenatello. On 1. July 1908 he first sang the role that was subsequently to be most closely associated with him – Verdi´s “Otello”. As Otello Tenatello made guest appearances in virtually all the important opera houses of the world. In fact he sang the role more than 500 times and was generally deemed to be the legitimate successor of Francesco Tamagno. Apart from the dramatic tenor roles, he continued to sing Iyric roles like Faust, Rodolfo, Masaniello ("La Muette de Partici") etc. Other roles in his repertoire included Raoul in "Les Huguenots", Andrea Chenier, Radames, Don José, Cavaradossi, Samson, Tannhäuser and Hermann ("Pique Dame"). Zenatello was especially acclaimed in North- and South America. For several seasons he was a member of the Chicago Opera, appearing also at the Manhatten Opera House, New York, in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Sao Paolo etc. Of biographical importance for him was the Opera Festival in Verona, as he was One of the founders of this Festival. He sang Radames at the opening of the Festival in 1913. He continued to be associated with the Festival until the end of his lire - for same time also as impressario. The recordings of this eminent artist are priceless treasures of the grammophone.
